I guess I'm wondering why "mostly older, post-transition individuals" are attending "support" groups.

Oh... I missed that. Post transition? Yes, why?

I might have an idea. Perhaps it is the context. In other words, how "transition" is defined.
In some cases, a simple castration, together with HRT will do. For many, nothing so drastic is required and HRT will suffice.
Others consider the day they "came out" at work, or to their families to be the day they "transitioned".
Is it any wonder why, those not so familiar with the "diversity" of said transition might be easily confused.
Consider the limited view of say, a single mother of two  small children, working as a clerk in your local grocery store...or an iron worker in a steal mill. Would they have the same understanding of transition as that of an individual well schooled in the subtleties and diversities of modern day gender theory or transition, where even formally simple concepts like man/woman are open for debate?
I would suggest not. So perhaps that my help to understand why  "mostly older, post-transition individuals" are attending support groups. Maybe it is that they need help or support dealing with the confusion or the lack of understanding of others, not as well....."educated" as they are.

Complete,

It's pretty unlikely that the member who was employed as a woman in 1961 can belong to the "I've come out so I've transitioned" school of thought. Which really piques my interest.

Anyway, the question was for Kiera... and I really am quite curious to hear from her. Both in regard to the group's raison d'etre and her own feelings. I can only imagine, but it must be a confusing and difficult situation.

Kiera, I know you're busy with babysitting right now, but do write when you have the time...if you don't mind? ٩(๑❛ᴗ❛๑)۶

Well since many, if not all, are single lonely people who live in the COVID19 city of Atlanta, trapped in tiny apartments, suppose it's just a way of getting out and socializing by mostly discussing what's currently going on in their lives - very much unlike here?
Different faces come & go every two weeks and while I much prefer to meet in person perhaps they'll one day BURN Atlanta DOWN . . just like Sherman did? Ever watch the Netflix series "Into The Badlands"? Perhaps "Baron Trump" will wise up by restricting, containing all US travel by not letting "those rat people" into Republican territory at all? One can only hope!
In the meantime, it is I who's the "newcomer" having otherwise not talked to Erin in almost 10 years. I asked via FB if she still held weekly meets and she provided, simple as that and it's "FREE". Attendance is not mandatory and the only reason I attend is I may want to "officially" start my transition? Having had zero "medical benefits" since retirement in 2008 (which I never used anyway) my Medicare kicks in beginning early next year and am hoping "the premiums" don't outweigh my forty years of SA and endless forking out of CASH!

Somehow I doubt it but, then again, "one can only hope"? The PLAN is to get onto Dr Powers waitlist in Michigan, see if a proper "transition dose" makes a diff and, although quite happy where at now, perhaps some FFS to look a tad younger I mean who wouldn't mind that (and losing again the 20lbs I've gained since less 'active')?

Ah... so it's kind of a temporary social club thing then, for until things settle down?

I'm still surprised, though, that post-transition women would come looking for something like that. I'd have thought they'd have their own circles in the real world that they'd feel much closer to. Especially that someone who'd already transitioned—what—wow, almost sixty years ago!? Was she one of Harry Benjamin's patients?

Hmmm... I've heard a lot about netflix but haven't ever seen it. LOL.

So... finally, going forward then? ٩( ᐛ )و

You doubt that the premiums won't cost more than paying your own way in cash? But... is it worth getting into the program, then? Or is this the only chance you have to do so? Sorry... I don't know anything about your system.

Anyway... if you want to go to Dr. Powers it might be good to contact him even before anything happens, I think. From what I understood the waiting list is growing all the time. That said, I also think he's looking for someone to work with him. Whether or not that happens is another question, though...
