Thoughts on the Corona Virus.
« on: March 12, 2020, 07:26:24 PM »
An internet post started a chain of thoughts and it's possible that some of our members could benefit from it. The post made two points. The first is that Vitamin D besides helping protect your bones is also important to your immune system. The second point was that a test of the population of several large cities in China indicated the population had consistently low levels of Vitamin D.

This could be explained by several factors. Vitamin D is difficult to find in food. Much of our Vitamin D is produced by sun exposure on our skin so in warn and sunny climates, Vitamin D isn't a problem. In the winter, clothing greatly reduces the sun exposure and more time indoors reduces sun exposure. It may not be the fact that we are closer to people in the winter but instead a weakened immune system is the primary reason the cold and flu spread so easily in the winter.

Vitamin D isn't likely to prevent you from getting the Corona Virus so your first line of defense is reducing exposure and proper hygiene. What it might do it improve your bodies ability to fight the virus so you have a much milder case should you become infected.

Vitamin D is something you need to be careful with. High dosages can be toxic as your body stores the excess. If your blood test includes a test for Vitamin D, that should tell you if you're getting enough without supplements. If you decide to go the supplement route, don't take more than 2 or 3 times the minimum daily requirement without consulting your doctor. Most of the time that amount is contained in one daily multiple Vitamin tablet. This is not a case of more is better and you only need enough to ensure your levels are in the healthy range.
